Choosing the Right Size Artwork for Each Room

The size of a painting significantly impacts the understanding and appeal of interior decor and design. This size can influence the overall appearance and dimensions of a space and is a key factor in the attractiveness of a room. Large and panoramic paintings typically highlight a resting area and add a sense of depth and expansiveness to the space. Additionally, choosing smaller paintings can be more suitable for smaller spaces with detailed decor and help maintain overall balance. The size of the painting, along with attention to its style and colors, gives interior design a unique character and greatly contributes to setting the mood and overall feeling of the space.

How can the features of decor influence the choice of painting size?

The size of a painting affects each of the following aspects of room decor:

  • Attention: The larger the painting size, the more it draws attention, and vice versa. Smaller paintings tend to attract less focus.
  • Depth and dimensions: The greater the aspect ratio difference between length and width of a painting, the more it influences the perception of depth. For example, a panoramic photo expands the space, while a vertical image makes the space appear taller.
  • Balance and harmony: The ratio to consider here in choosing the size of a painting is the level of detail in the artwork. Highly detailed paintings that are small may not suit large spaces. Conversely, a small, highly detailed painting might feel overwhelming in a bedroom. This means you should pay attention to the amount of detail each decor element provides to ensure all elements form a cohesive whole.
  • Highlighting: Whenever you want to emphasize or accentuate a corner, you can use a large painting there. Of course, keep the previous principles in mind.

What are the typical sizes of paintings when purchasing? Which size is suitable for which space?

Paintings come in various sizes, each suitable for specific purposes and locations. The choice of painting size depends on the available space, the style of decor, and the desired impact on the environment. It’s important that the size of the painting harmonizes with other decor elements to create a beautiful and balanced appearance. Below are some common sizes and their typical uses:

  • Small: Usually between 20×20 cm and 40×40 cm. Small paintings are suitable for limited spaces such as small rooms, hallways, and small wall sections. These are often installed in groups to create a beautiful, coordinated effect. Small paintings are appropriate for rooms of 6 to 10 square meters.
  • Medium: Typically between 50×50 cm and 70×70 cm. These sizes are suitable for medium-sized walls and living or reception rooms. Medium paintings can serve as focal points on a wall, creating a striking visual impact. They are suitable for rooms of 10 to 15 square meters.
  • Large: Usually between 80×80 cm and 100×100 cm or even larger. Large paintings are ideal for big walls and open spaces such as large halls, lobbies, and spacious living rooms. They can cover an entire wall on their own and have a strong visual impact. For rooms larger than 12 square meters and smaller than 20 square meters, choose large-sized paintings for decor.

  • Panoramic: These paintings have a wider length-to-width ratio and are typically used for expansive scenes or landscapes. Their dimensions vary but generally have a greater length than width. They are very suitable for long walls and open spaces. If your room is about 20 square meters, meaning it can fit two 12-square-meter rugs, you can install a panoramic painting on the long wall. If your room is 15 square meters but connected to a kitchen island, you can also hang a panoramic painting on that long wall. In the latter case, your chosen painting should have fewer details.

  • Custom: Many artists and buyers prefer to have paintings made in custom sizes to precisely match the space and interior decor. Custom dimensions can be any size agreed upon by the buyer and artist. For example, if you have a hall with a ceiling height of 4 meters from the ground, you might order three vertical panels with continuous designs that, viewed from afar, appear as one panoramic piece. In reality, this is a gallery wall. The height of this collection of paintings can reach up to 2.5 meters.
